VW has confirmed that the flagship Golf R Cabrio will go on sale in 2013
Volkswagen has confirmed that the Golf R Cabriolet will go on sale in the UK from next April. But unlike the hatchback R, it will be front-wheel-drive only.
Performance figures are yet to be released, but with an expected 0-62 time of around six seconds the Cabriolet will be marginally slower than the fixed-roof R. Rather than the Golf R’s turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces 267bhp, the cabriolet is expected to be fitted with the detuned 261bhp 2.0 TSI engine from the front-wheel drive Scirocco R
A six-speed manual will be offered, as well as a twin-clutch DSG auto. Lowered suspension, beefier brakes and bigger wheels will improve the handling, while a 155mph top speed will make it the fastest cabriolet VW has ever built.
Expect the Golf R Cabriolet to cost around £5,000 more than the Golf GTI Cabriolet, that’s a smaller premium than the hatchback R over the GTI due to the lack of four-wheel drive. Choosing the DSG gearbox will cost an extra £1,300, with prices likely to start from around £34,500.
