Study shows that drivers are twice as likely to have a car crash on 17 December than any other day
A recent study by Co-operative Insurance has concluded that the week of 18 to 24 December is the worst week of the year for car crashes. However, December 17 is the most dangerous day, with drivers twice as likely to be involved in a shunt on this day than any other.
The Co-operative Insurance study analysed car crash data collected over the past four years. As well as the most dangerous day, it also discovered that the popular Ford Focus is the most likely car to be involved in a crash on 17 December, with the Vauxhall Astra and Vauxhall Corsa coming in second and third respectively.
The insurance firm blamed the high number of incidents on the pre-Christmas rush, bad weather and the fact that days are at their shortest at this time of year.
The Co-op also discovered that drivers in Glasgow and Birmingham are almost four times more likely to crash than the national average, while drivers in Uxbridge and Ipswich are three times as likely, and Brighton drivers are twice as likely to start their Christmas break with a prang.
