The Beginning of the End of Driving

The week after Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill that makes driving autonomous cars legal in California, Google's Anthony Levandowski said he expects his company to have them on the market in five years. The Silicon Valley Internet search engine company abruptly retrenched from the statement of its autonomous car chief, as quoted by John McElroy in AutoLine Daily. He was not available for comment to Motor Trend. Whatever Google says, the driverless car is nigh upon us. At a formal demonstration to international press of its latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems unit technologies in Alzenau, and of its latest interior systems in nearby Babenhausen, automotive supply giant Continental outlined an aggressive agenda for driverless cars. Continental plans to have autonomous assistance available for limited freeway driving and for construction areas by 2015, says senior vice president Ralf Lenninger. It will add low-speed city capability in 2017, followed by two-lane highway and country road driverless car technology about the end of the decade. The company calls this "the car you can't crash," and it will meet the company's goal for a zero-percent accident rate.  Continental demonstrated key components of the advancing technology, including 360-degree cameras; adaptive cruise control; emergency brake assist using radar and camera options; and emergency brake assist pedestrian protection, in which the car can make an evasive maneuver by steering itself out and back into a lane. This makes at least basic driverless car technology feasible, Lenninger notes. Several demonstration cars had Continental's stereo cameras, which can outline and identify pedestrians and bicyclists for an autonomous system. The European Union will take up the issue of driverless car legislation at a convention in Vienna, says Matthew Avery, chief of research at Thatcham Research, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's counterpart in the United Kingdom. Avery was the keynote speaker at Continental ADAS' conference in Germany. Meantime, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration "sees a lot of liability issues" with driverless cars, Avery adds. So far, it's been up to the states of Nevada, Florida, and now California to advance the cause in the U.S. Arizona and Hawaii considered similar laws, but failed to pass them. "These state legislatures introduced their own bills without Google's involvement," a Google spokesperson explains about Arizona and Hawaii. "Similarly, Florida introduced a bill and Google became engaged later on, after the state expressed initial interest." The Google spokesperson says Nevada's laws "were forward-looking, and we'd had productive and cooperative discussions with the legislators there. We also saw potential because Nevada is close to our main operations, and has a relatively high rate of pedestrian deaths, an aging population, and versatile terrain. We began our roughly 300,000 miles of testing our self-driving technology in California, and it's where we've covered the most ground." Continental expects to have full autonomy available by 2025, with premium/luxury cars offering the freeway/construction technology first, in 2015. Continental was only nominally involved with Cadillac on its 2015 SuperCruise option. We'll guess any combination of these brands in 2015: Volvo, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and/or BMW.

Vehicle interiors gain importance in J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2012 study

Maruti Suzuki models receive awards in three segments; Toyota models receive awards in two segments
New Swift DZire interiors

While low maintenance costs and the overall reliability factor have been major areas of focus with vehicle rating agencies here in India, it appears that new-vehicle satisfaction is increasingly being driven by its interiors as per data released in a recent J.D. Power Asia Pacific 2012 India Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study. The India APEAL Study now in its 14th year based on feedback from umpteen new car owners in the country was able to assess their satisfaction levels during the first two months of ownership.

Performance data across categories like the vehicle’s exteriors , interiors (storage and space; audio, entertainment, navigation, seats, heating, ventilation and air conditioning), driving safety and fuel economy was collated as an index score based on a 1,000-point scale, with a higher score indicating higher satisfaction.

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga third row seating with second row down

What surfaced as result of this study was that during the past four years, the impact of the vehicle interior on overall satisfaction has increased consistently, particularly in the two fastest-growing vehicle segments in India - small car  (which includes entry compact, compact and premium compact cars) and utility vehicles (which includes MUV/ MPVs, SUVs and vans).

However, visibility and driving safety, followed by fuel economy, continue to be the leading drivers of satisfaction among new-vehicle owners in India. The interior factor has experienced a 28-point improvement compared with 2009, and an 8-point improvement over 2011.

Sales of Lexus hybrids top 500,000

Sales of Lexus hybrids top 500,000

Lexus has announced that it has sold more than 500,000 hybrids globally

Lexus has announced that sales of its hybrid models have passed the 500,000 mark. It has taken seven years for the firm to hit the half million sales milestone, as its first hybrid model, the RX 400h, went on sale in 2005.
The Lexus RX 400h hybrid SUV has been the firm’s best-selling model, accounting for more than half of total Lexus hybrid sales. The relatively new CT 200h is the second best-selling model, despite being on sale for one year.
The UK market accounts for seven per cent of global Lexus hybrid sales, with Europe making up a quarter in total.
Lexus says that around a quarter of the cars that it sells are hybrid models, and that sales of its alternative powertrain vehicles are on the rise – a trend that’s set to continue in 2013, when the new IS 300h hybrid arrives.
When it comes to hybrids, Lexus claims a number of industry-first introductions. The GS 450h was the first rear-wheel drive full hybrid saloon, and the LS 600h was the first V8 hybrid – a car which Lexus claims is the most powerful hybrid vehicle on the road.

Suzuki makes final push in U.S.

Suzuki makes final push in U.S.

Corrected: The key for Suzuki to sell more cars in the United States, apparently, is to go out of business.
American Suzuki Motor Corp., the bankrupt U.S. distributor, got court permission to bring in 2,500 more cars for the U.S. market.
American Suzuki filed for bankruptcy on Nov. 5 in order to stop selling cars here and reorganize its motorcycle and watercraft businesses. Since then, Suzuki has sold 2,224 vehicles in November and dealers say sales have been strong in December. On Dec. 1, Suzuki had about 3,300 vehicles in inventory, according to Automotive News, sister publication to Autoweek.
Those sales are being helped by incentives to dealers and a seven-year warranty on the vehicles.
The bankruptcy court approved Suzuki borrowing $50 million to bring in the cars from Japan.
Freddie Reiss, American Suzuki's chief restructuring officer, told Bloomberg News, "When we told dealers, 'We have one last chance,' the dealers said, 'Go get them.' "
Those were the last cars built for the U.S. market, Reiss said.
Despite the burst of sales, Suzuki won't change its plans to stop selling cars in the United States. The company will continue to honor warranties and sell parts for several years.
Editor's note: This story has been corrected from its original version to reflect that American Suzuki Motor Corp., not Suzuki Motor, filed for bankruptcy.

Hyundai debuts smartphone car key tech

Hyundai Connectivity Concept swaps car keys for smartphones from 2015

Hyundai has shown a new Connectivity Concept near its European base in Germany that previews its smartphone integration technology due to begin rolling out on production cars from 2015.
Smartphones can already be connected to a car’s infotainment system by Bluetooth. But the Hyundai system takes things further using wireless Near Field Technology (NFC) to allow a driver to lock and unlock the car by waving their phone over a tag on the car’s side window.

Hyundai debuts smartphone car key tech

Once inside, by placing your smartphone in the centre console, the Connectivity Concept allows content to be synced from the smartphone to the car, which is then displayed on a central seven-inch touchscreen. The phone is charged wirelessly too.
The Connectivity Concept was shown on a current Hyundai i30, and can also save a particular driver’s personal preferences for radio stations, seating positions, door mirror settings and more, tailoring the car to that particular driver’s profile saved on their smartphone.
Hyundai’s Senior Vice President, Allan Rushford, explained that the technology is designed to “harness the all-in-one functionality of existing smartphone technology and integrate it into everyday driving in a seamless fashion.”
Hyundai has developed the Connectivity Concept in conjunction with semiconductor firm Broadcom Corporation. The firms are also working on improved lane departure warning systems and reversing cameras for future Hyundai models.

2013 Ford Kuga

Our verdict on the bigger, more practical new Ford Kuga, as it arrives in UK showrooms

Verdict

4
Turning the European Kuga into a global model makes business sense for Ford, as it enables the brand to offer a stylish, practical and highly desirable mid-size SUV for a more competitive price than ever. For that it deserves to do well. But while the car is bigger, better equipped and more hi-tech than its predecessor, it’s neither as sharp to drive nor as cool as the original.
More than 45,000 Ford Kugas have found homes in the UK since its 2008 launch. Now there’s an all-new model which, instead of being sold only in Europe, joins the Focus as a One Ford product that will be marketed in over 100 countries worldwide. But does the push for global appeal mean the Kuga no longer has the sharp drive and sleek style that made it a hit?
With its swept-back headlights, creased shoulder line and sharp, upkicked C-pillar, the new car is still recognisable as a Kuga. It’s 8mm lower and 4mm narrower than before, but the extra 81mm grafted on to the car’s length to add luggage space means that it appears considerably bigger than its predecessor – particularly when viewed in profile.
Still, while it remains a stylish, sporty-looking SUV, thanks to that rising shoulder line, creased bonnet and aggressive bumper, the proportions are less satisfying than those of the taut original.
Part of the design compromise stems from Ford’s need to counter criticism of the old car’s small boot. Plus, in the US the new Kuga replaces the Escape model, which was larger and more utilitarian. The result is a 71-litre increase in luggage space – to 481 litres – if you have the new reclining rear seatbacks set upright. That’s more than in a VW Tiguan, and the low lip makes it easy to load.
The rear seats now fold flat, too, and the boot floor has two levels – although on its lower setting, there’s a big step between boot floor and seats. Either way, the maximum capacity is 1,653 litres.
The Kuga has the option of an automatic tailgate. Wave your foot under the rear bumper and, provided you are carrying the key, the hatch door whirrs open. Perfect if your hands are full!
In the back seats there’s plenty of leg and headroom, even if you’re more than six feet tall and the driver has their seat set back. The rear squabs are firm, but the front seats are more comfortable.
In the front, the dash and centre console are made from a patchwork of different plastics, ranging from hard, grained material near the windscreen to classier, softer-touch and gloss black trim as you move down between the seats. But while the new One Ford cabin looks and feels good in the facelifted Fiesta, in the Kuga the finish trails on quality.
That said, there’s plenty of tech, including the SYNC voice-activation system on all but the entry-level Zetec. If you opt for four-wheel drive, you also get a useful graphic between the dials which shows which axle the engine is feeding power to.
Although there is now the option of Ford’s powerful 1.6-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, most UK buyers will opt for the 2.0 diesel Kuga with a six-speed manual box. The 161bhp version in our car isn’t the quietest engine, with a pronounced rattle at
low speeds which smooths out as the revs build. There’s wind noise from the A-pillars at 70mph, but otherwise the Kuga is quiet and refined. The box is slick, too, which makes it easy to keep the diesel on boost.
The outgoing car was renowned for being great to drive – it felt like a high-riding Focus rather than an SUV. But the shift to meet global tastes has compromised this sharpness. As the power-steering is now fully electric, it’s light and free of feedback. It also feels dead about the straight-ahead, particularly if you drive a higher-spec car riding on 18-inch rims, like our Titanium model.
Body roll is more of an issue, too, despite the fact that the Kuga still has a relatively firm ride. And although the new car weighs the same as the original, you can feel its weight more obviously under braking than before.
