2013 Nissan Juke Nismo unveiled at Tokyo Auto Salon

The Nissan Juke is a polarizing proposition -- detractors claim it’s the worst thing since the Pontiac Aztek, even as its fans embrace its quirky styling.
If you’re in the former camp, you’re probably not going to like the 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo. Just unveiled at the 2013 Toyko Auto Salon, the crossover’s baroque curves are clad in a substantial body kit that includes a reshaped front bumper, redesigned spoiler, LED fog lights and new side skirts.
According to Nissan, these exterior modifications contribute to a 37 percent increase in downforce compared with the stock model.
We’re glad to hear that the body kit wasn’t tacked on for appearance’s sake, but whether a driver will actually need the extra grip is a matter of debate. The Juke Nismo’s turbocharged 1.6-liter inline four kicks out about 197 hp.
That’s more than the 188 hp output of the current turbo-four Juke, but well under the 480 hp figure cited for the wicked Juke-R. In any event, the all-wheel drive Juke Nismo’s engine is mated to a mandatory CVT equipped with something Nissan is calling a “close-ratio seven-speed manual mode.”
The Nissan Juke Nismo will go on sale this February -- in Japan, at least. There’s no word on if, or when, we’ll see the vehicle in the States.

2013 Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet facelifted

Official pictures of the revised Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet

Following the reveal of the facelifted E-Class saloon and Estate last month, the Mercedes E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet have also received a fresh look and new technology.
Like the revised saloon, the E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet’s noses now feature two, single headlamp lenses rather than a pair of twin light units. However, the new LED-equipped lights do feature flowing daytime running lights which give the appearance of the quad headlights of the old model.
The new Coupe and Cabriolet also get new front bumpers with much more pronounced air intakes, while the rear of both feature revised LED tail-lights.
There’s a new rear bumper which has a wider diffuser, too, helping to give the car a more muscular stance, while the pontoon-style crease in the car’s flank that was ditched on the facelifted saloon is retained, and will become a trademark design feature reserved for the Coupe and Cabriolet models.
A three-tube instrument binnacle, analogue clock and redesigned air vents are transposed from the new saloon’s interior, and the gear selector on automatic models switches from the centre console to the steering column.
The drop-top car features the manufacturer's Aircap system as standard. Designed to reduce wind buffeting when the roof is lowered, the cap pops up from the top of the windscreen automatically when you hit 25mph, and lowers again when you slow below 9mph. Airscarf neck heaters built into the front seats are optional.
Both the Coupe and Cabriolet benefit from new safety kit derived from the next S-Class, including the stereo multi-purpose camera which enables the car to detect oncoming or crossing traffic, pedestrians and traffic signs.
An automatic city braking system is also fitted as standard, while the latest adaptive cruise control with steering assist to keep the car in its lane, and active high beam assist, which masks out part of the main beam of the LED headlights to prevent dazzling oncoming drivers, are on the options list.
The full UK engine range is yet to be confirmed, but two petrol and three diesel units will be offered. Mercedes’ new efficient four-cylinder BlueDIRECT petrol unit will also join the line-up.
Six-speed manual or 7G-Tronic auto gearboxes will be available when the car goes on sale in April. Prices will also be confirmed closer to the on-sale date.

2013 Toyota Avalon becomes first car to offer wireless phone charging

Toyota North America has announced the 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited will be the first vehicle in the world to be available with in-car wireless phone charging capability.
The Toyota Avalon’s in-console Qi wireless charging system, available for Qi–enabled mobile phones and devices, is located on a charging pad integrated into the car’s ‘ebin’ (electronic bin) sliding lid.
With Qi being a global standard for wireless power and charging, any Qi-enabled device can be charged on the pad simply by resting on it, regardless of the device’s brand or manufacturer. The charging pad can also be switched on and off by a switch found inside the ebin.
Toyota says that while many new mobile phones feature built-in Qi wireless charging capabilities, those that aren’t are often able to become compatible with a simple aftermarket case or backing.
The 2013 Toyota Avalon hit US showrooms at the beginning of December. The Avalon is not sold in Australia, with the locally made Toyota Aurion filling its role in the local range.

2013 Porsche Cayman release Sport Turismo, Cayman videos

Hanukkah's passed us by. Christmas Eve slipped into Christmas morning and the denouement of Boxing Day. The most pressing decision right now is when one might pull down the lights and dispense with the tree.
Your author's been whiling away the time researching 914 brake and suspension upgrades and poring over a recently acquired first edition of Karl Ludwigsen's Excellence Was Expected. The original incarnation of Porsche's definitive history ends with the development of the 928. While the final shape of the company's first watercooled, front-engined V8 car wound up a slippery fastback hatch, a shooting-brake design was also studied.
Later in the 928's life, Porsche went so far as to lengthen an S4 model and add rear-passenger half-doors to aid ingress and egress. The result, the ungainly928 H50 concept, wasn't nearly as tidy as the two-door shooting brake rendition, nor did it meet Porsche's standards for structural rigidity. After a bit of developmental work, it found itself shelved.
Conversely, the Sport Turismo, the company's vision of a possible future Panamera, irons out the odd proportions that make the fast-hunchback Panny resemble a cybernetic manatee.
Porsche's now released a video chronicling the concept car's journey from clay model to show-floor centerpiece. A hit at this year's Paris show, we were hoping to see it up close at Los Angeles. Apparently, Porsche wanted the assembled crowd to focus on the unveiling of the new Cayman.
While they've yet to hand off copies the mid-engined hardtop to the press corps, Stuttgart has released some shiny, shiny video of the Boxster's new brothers romping around San Francisco. We know those roads. We've always wondered what they'd be like with no traffic. As long as we're dreaming, we'll fantasize about tackling them in a 906. Sort of a Streets of San Francisco/Miami Vice hybrid, don'tcha know.

BMW M135i and the fastest Christmas carol in the world

BMW takes a novel approach to a Christmas classic, using four carol singers and an M135i

It appears even carmakers aren’t immune to a bit of Christmas cheer – as BMW has proven with this automotive take on a festive favourite.
The video showcases one of the company’s latest performance cars, the M135i hot hatch, driving around a twisty racetrack, while its occupants attempt a harmonious rendition of Jingle Bells.

Thanks to the M135i’s mammoth 316bhp and 450Nm of torque, it doesn’t quite go according to plan. The flagship BMW 1 Series is capable of 155mph and 0-62mph in just 4.9 seconds.
So take a look at the clip to find out how this unusual ride pans out – and have a very merry Christmas!

A Mercedes AMG Christmas treat

The perfect festive treat from the team at Mercedes AMG

With Christmas just around the corner, many of you will be finishing work this week before heading home for a day or two of well-deserved self-indulgence. A large proportion of us, however, will be sacrificing endless hours in the kitchen trying to master the perfect Christmas dinner.

Not if you’re part of the team at Mercedes AMG, though. They simply take a high-powered SLS AMG GT3 racecar, turn the heat up to 11 and let the engine do its work.

Check out this festive-themed video, where the 548bhp, track-only GT3 winds gently around a racetrack in an attempt to create a set of ideal Christmas treats...

Volkswagen Golf R Cabriolet confirmed for UK

VW has confirmed that the flagship Golf R Cabrio will go on sale in 2013

Volkswagen has confirmed that the Golf R Cabriolet will go on sale in the UK from next April. But unlike the hatchback R, it will be front-wheel-drive only.
Performance figures are yet to be released, but with an expected 0-62 time of around six seconds the Cabriolet will be marginally slower than the fixed-roof R. Rather than the Golf R’s turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine, which produces 267bhp, the cabriolet is expected to be fitted with the detuned 261bhp 2.0 TSI engine from the front-wheel drive Scirocco R
A six-speed manual will be offered, as well as a twin-clutch DSG auto. Lowered suspension, beefier brakes and bigger wheels will improve the handling, while a 155mph top speed will make it the fastest cabriolet VW has ever built.
Expect the Golf R Cabriolet to cost around £5,000 more than the Golf GTI Cabriolet, that’s a smaller premium than the hatchback R over the GTI due to the lack of four-wheel drive. Choosing the DSG gearbox will cost an extra £1,300, with prices likely to start from around £34,500.

Brand NEW 2014 Chevrolet Corvette

Chevrolet on Monday released a new teaser video for the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Corvette -- the third of four videos -- and the newest installment puts a brief spotlight on the new sports car's interior.
The video shows glimpses of a headrest, rolls of material, a large piece of leather being tossed onto a table, marking and sewing operations.
Interior design manager Ryan Vaughan has his say: "The exterior excites you. It draws you in. But the interior is actually where you experience the car from."
Improving the comfort and quality of the Corvette's interior ranks high on the wish list of fans and critics for the 2014 model.
The final video in the teaser series is set for release on Jan. 10, three days before the 2014 Corvette makes its debut for the Detroit auto show. Chevrolet is posting the videos at its reveal website, www.one13thirteen.com.

Pagani Huayra

Pagani has unleashed a maelstrom of photos and info on its new supercar, the Huayra. (And here we thought “Touareg” was hard to pronounce.) The name is taken from Huayra Tata—the god of wind among the Aymara people of South America—and here is the car in an electrifying nutshell: 690 hp, 738 lb-ft of torque, enough exotic materials to build five Ferraris, and looks that are, well, remarkably restrained for Pagani.
For those unfamiliar with the brand, Pagani is the brainchild of former Lambo and race-car designer Horacio Pagani. The company’s sole product to this point has been the Zonda supercar, which debuted more than a decade ago and was spun off into multiple variants, each seemingly more hard-core than the last. Given that only a handful were produced each year, every Zonda model was a limited edition, and among the most recent iterations were the Zonda Tricolore—a tribute to Italy’s version of the Blue Angels—and the Zonda R—a track-only, carbon-fiber monster propelled by 739 hp and 524 lb-ft of torque.
What every Zonda had in common: a Mercedes-sourced V-12 and absolute unavailability in the United States. That car’s replacement, this Huayra, will continue to use a Merc powerplant, but it also will be the first Pagani to be sold on our shores, and was engineered specifically with American safety regulations in mind. No word yet on pricing—figure on something around the cost of a small skyscraper—or when U.S. sales will commence.
An AMG Heart Beats Within
About that engine. Cradled by a chrome-moly subframe and surrounded by reams of carbon fiber, the mid-engined Huayra’s motivator is a 60-degree AMG-sourced twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12, and its output bears repeating: 690 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque. (The engine was developed specifically for this car and isn’t cut-and-pasted from any AMG model. Don’t expect a similar deal with any other manufacturers, however, as AMG head Ola Källenius recently told us this arrangement with Pagani is singular in nature.) Two side-mounted radiators feed the intercoolers, which are positioned above the cylinder heads and utilize covers that function as overflow tanks for engine coolant. Lubrication is accomplished via a dry-sump system.
The V-12 exhales through a titanium exhaust system claimed to weigh less than 22 pounds; we can’t wait to hear it, as Pagani says the setup has been tuned for a rumble at idle and to be reminiscent of aircraft at speed. The transmission is a single-clutch sequential seven-speed unit supplied by Xtrac. Pagani says it explored a dual-clutch box, but determined that quicker shift speeds would be canceled out by the fact that it would weigh some 150 pounds more. As to overall weight, the Huayra is claimed to weigh 2976 pounds dry, with 56 percent of that on the rear axle. We figure the car will weigh 3200 pounds ready to run, or about the same as a Corvette Z06, and we also estimate 0-to-60-mph, 0-to-100-mph, and quarter-mile times of 3.0, 6.2, and 10.8 seconds.
Looks Like a Pagani—Albeit a Slightly Underwhelming One
The Huayra is immediately recognizable as a Pagani thanks to elements like the Zonda R–esque headlamps (here fitted with additional LED running lights) and the now-signature center-exit quad exhaust, which is comprised of two sets of stacked pipes at the midline of the rear fascia. The carbon-fiber monocoque was specifically designed for weight savings; all air ducts and vents were molded directly into the structure, for example, which means fewer separate parts were needed. The Huayra was conceived with the aerodynamic principles of a wing in mind, but don't worry—it's an upside-down wing, which helps the car better stick to the ground rather than take flight, Mercedes-Benz CLR GT1—style. The front ride height adjusts dynamically, and there are active control flaps at each corner of the car that adjust based on speed, yaw rate, lateral g’s, steering angle, and throttle position. The idea, Pagani says, is to keep the car neutral and minimize body roll in all conditions.
We can’t get over the fact, however, that the Huayra looks a little, well, boring. It’s sleeker than the outgoing Zonda, with a less upright windshield and a more flowing profile, but it has a bit of generic supercar about it. The wheels are spectacular, however, and you can bet that the car will gain more exciting addenda such as splitters, wings, and ducts—movable flaps replace a rear spoiler on this debut model—as the small Italian company begins to churn out Huayra variants. Check out the Zonda’s evolution from the 1999 original to the wilder models of the recent past for a template.
But where the exterior conveys a sense of restraint, the method of entry hints at the extravagance within. Lift the Huayra’s dramatic gullwing doors, and you’re greeted by a symphony of leather, carbon fiber, polished metal, and stitching that’s every bit as striking as the exterior isn’t. All primary controls have been moved to the steering wheel, as seems to be the current fashion among the supercar set. Two jet-engine-shaped vents sit atop a center stack crafted from a single hunk of aluminum and lined with a row of toggle switches. The door panels are things of beauty, with their leather pulls, aluminum accents, and exposed carbon. A touch screen controls the audio and navigation systems, among other functions. The automatic transmission’s gear lever was designed, the company says, as a “monument to the art of the manual gearshift” and as evidence of “progress that does not deny the past”; this is perhaps the dumbest thing we’ve read all week. Still, even in pictures, the interior is pretty breathtaking. (You can check out beauty shots in the Pagani-sourced video below.)
There’s always something exciting about new supercars, but given that Pagani manages to craft such machines with a relatively tiny staff, and in the backyards of more established supercar makers in Italy, makes us feel a little tinglier than normal. Speaking of feeling all tingly, when do
